I am not a born speaker! I tell my shy students that public speaking is an acquired art. That I used to cry when called upon to give presentations. There were thoughts in my head but no words emerged from my mouth. Now look at me: blah blah blah without notes. This may never take the form of spoken word eloquence, but I learned through doing, through standing my body up in public spaces, through teaching and giving conference papers and chairing panels, to perform coherently. Thoughts found voice.
Publications
Writing came more easily to me than talking - playing with words on paper knowing no one else has yet to hear or read them. So publishing was harder because you have to let your words go. They're out there in the world. Now I have published my scholarly findings and edited volumes of research by others in many academic venues. My short stories have appeared in literary magazines, and I have edited two special issues of the Green Mountains Review. My activism too has taken verbal shape in a few public venues.
